Mission
A launch effort aimed at flying nanosatellites weekly, with a two-person reusable rocket as a later goal.
The Bagaveev Corporation tried to build an orbital rocket on less than a million dollars. Nadir Bagaveyev, a US Army veteran turned propulsion engineer, founded it in 2013 to launch 10 to 12 kilogram nanosatellites on a small two-stage vehicle powered by 3D-printed aerospike engines, and took it through Y Combinator in 2015.
The engines were real, static-fired in the Mojave Desert. The rocket never was. An orbital launch promised for 2019 did not happen, and the company went quiet around 2020 without announcing a shutdown; industry trackers list it as out of business, and no outlet covered the end.
3D printing and aerospike nozzles make engines cheaper, but not a hundred times cheaper, and a hundred times was roughly the gap between what the company raised and what orbital programs cost.
