Mission

Small re-entry spacecraft returning materials made in orbit back to Earth.

ELS-R is a free-flying satellite that hosts experiments or manufacturing in orbit and then sends the results home in a separable capsule. The first article, AOBA, weighs about 220 kilograms and works through a fixed sequence: launch, weeks in orbit, a deorbit burn on a hybrid thruster the company designed itself, capsule separation, a lift-controlled reentry, parachute, splashdown and recovery by ship. The lift control is the technical distinction, because steering during reentry lowers the peak deceleration a payload feels and tightens the area anyone has to search.

Ryohei Kobayashi founded the company in 2021, during the first year of his master's degree at Tohoku University, on a specific reading of the decade ahead. The International Space Station retires around 2030, and while there will be no shortage of ways to send things up, there is almost no way to bring them back. Japan has none of its own.

Five and a half years on, nothing has flown. What exists is ground testing, a completed critical design review and a flight model being assembled. The launch date has moved repeatedly, and it is no longer entirely in the company's hands: AOBA is manifested on Isar Aerospace's Spectrum, a rocket that failed thirty seconds into its only flight and has been standing down through 2026. ElevationSpace has also never published how many kilograms the capsule can bring home, an odd thing to leave out when that is the product.
