Mission
Lunar rovers and mobility systems, from MAPP robotic rovers to crewed terrain vehicles.
MAPP is a four-wheeled rover about as big as a carry-on suitcase, five to ten kilograms depending on configuration, carrying up to fifteen kilograms of customer payload at about ten centimetres per second. The range scales from there through a thirty kilogram version to a quarter-tonne platform, and then to Pegasus, sized to drive two suited astronauts across the lunar south pole. Customers buy payload slots and the data that comes back rather than rovers, the same way they buy a ride to orbit.
The company started in 2017 selling air quality sensor networks and turned toward the Moon on a plain premise: nothing else on the lunar surface happens until something can drive. Prospecting, site survey, construction and crewed exploration all wait on mobility. The strategy has been to fly small and often on commercial landers, building flight heritage and an autonomy stack cheaply, then use that record to win the large crewed vehicle. In May 2026 it worked, when NASA awarded Lunar Outpost a task order reported at $220 million for Pegasus, one of two providers selected.
The weakness in that strategy is visible in its best-known mission. MAPP reached the lunar surface in March 2025 aboard Intuitive Machines' Athena lander, the first American commercial rover to arrive at the Moon, and then never left the lander. Athena came down in the wrong orientation, could not make power, and the mission was over in under thirteen hours. MAPP has still never driven on the Moon, so its mobility system, thermal design and lunar-night survival remain unproven in the place they were built for, and the second attempt rides IM-3, from a company that has now landed two spacecraft out of two in the wrong attitude. Pegasus asks Lunar Outpost to go from a ten kilogram rover to a crew-rated vehicle in about two years, funded largely by NASA, on an Artemis schedule that has been rewritten more than once.
