Mission
Industrial-scale 3D printers for construction, from a system first designed to print habitats out of Martian soil.
RedWorks makes industrial 3D printers, and it arrived at them by way of Mars. The company formed out of NASA's 3D Printed Habitat Challenge in 2015, where its team designed dwellings to be printed from Martian soil, and its early technology sintered raw dirt and sand into building material with no binder or imported feedstock, a bench-tested version of building with whatever ground you land on.
The pivot came fast. A 2017 accelerator steered the team toward the terrestrial construction industry, on the reasoning that the same on-site printing that would serve a Mars base serves any builder facing supply chains and material costs. By 2018 it had printed stone elements on site for a California park, and the Mars framing was gone from its material within the year.
Today the company sells printers rather than habitats, most recently through a 2025 partnership with EXO5D to distribute industrial-scale machines in the US, and the print-from-dirt capability survives as an option rather than the product. It stays in this directory as one of the clearest examples of a pattern the industry produces regularly: technology built for space finding its market on Earth, with the founding ambition preserved in the company's name.
