Mission

Hurricane and severe weather forecasting aimed at earlier and more accurate warnings of how strong a storm will get.

Tropical Weather Analytics wants to measure hurricanes from orbit the way hunter aircraft do from inside them. Its planned Hurricane Hunter constellation would photograph storms in stereo from small satellites, recovering cloud-top heights and three-dimensional winds, data that today comes mostly from aircraft flying into the storm. The team is veteran Air Force geophysics scientists spun out of the defense contractor Visidyne, and the technique traces to CyMISS, a station-hosted experiment that demonstrated stereo measurement of tropical cyclones from 2014.

The bet is that a few satellites doing stereo photogrammetry can deliver aircraft-quality storm structure globally, and that insurers, governments and forecasters will pay for the forecast edge. In 2023 it signed Phantom Space to build and launch the constellation.

Nothing has launched. A decade after CyMISS there is no funded satellite and no named customer, the launch partner has itself never reached orbit, and the large contract figures on the company's site read as legacy Visidyne work rather than startup revenue. The blog is current through 2026, so the effort continues. The measurement was demonstrated; the business remains entirely ahead.
