Mission
Brokerage and integration services for satellite launches and ISS experiments.
Space BD makes nothing and flies nothing of its own, on purpose. It calls itself a trading company for space, and the description is exact: it brokers launches as the sole private provider of rideshare slots on Japan's H-IIA and H3 rockets, runs CubeSat deployment from the International Space Station's Kibo module as JAXA's commercialised operator, and sells microgravity experiments as a service. More than a hundred satellite missions have passed through its hands.
Masatoshi Nagasaki founded it in 2017 after eleven years as a trader at Mitsui, and he is not an engineer. The insight was that Japan's scarce resource in space is the interface rather than the hardware: the safety reviews, documentation and integration work that stand between a university or startup and a JAXA launch. Package that expertise commercially and every mission pays a toll, whichever hardware wins.
The dependence runs in one direction. The moat is built from JAXA frameworks, and the deepest part of it, the Kibo deployment business Space BD was reselected to operate, ends with the ISS itself in 2030. After that the position has to be rebuilt on commercial stations that do not yet exist. The model also has to survive competition from other integrators at thin brokerage margins, which is why the company keeps adding services, from in-orbit demonstration support to space education programs, on top of the launch trade.
