Mission
Plans a global network of space-themed retail and food and beverage destinations.
The Space Store has sold space to civilians since the mid-1990s: NASA-themed apparel, mission patches, models, meteorites and memorabilia, online at thespacestore.com and, since December 2024, from a physical shop in downtown Chattanooga, Tennessee. Dayna Steele, a Houston radio personality, founded it in the web's first retail wave, and it has changed hands several times since, landing as a brand of Firecrown Media, the publisher that also owns Astronomy magazine.
The wager, such as it is, is that space fandom is durable enough to support a dedicated shop against Amazon and every museum gift store. Thirty years of operation is its own kind of evidence.
Its self-descriptions run loose. The site credits its founding to a trailblazing astronaut, and Steele is a radio host; the claim of being the world's largest space merchandise retailer has no independent measure behind it. The shop itself, though, is real and open.
